Embrace the foundation to all questions
- Christ – “In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3)
- Therefore, we are asking “What is the mind of the Lord . . .?”
- What are clear instructions or examples from scripture?
- What are we seeing God doing?
- What are we hearing God saying?
- While these introductory phrases do not need to be stated for each question, sometimes it is helpful to do so to keep His Lordship and our posture in view.
Identify the core matter to be discerned
- The factor that leverages all others
- The principle that is out of alignment
- The persistent pattern of dysfunction
- The choice with optimum impact
- The value that must not be compromised
- The person(s) due primary consideration
Focus upon an actionable conclusion
- Avoid asking for “thinking,” “feeling,” “sensing”
- Integrate truths in tension
- Superintend dichotomies with a “third way”
- Invite a recommended course of action
Develop sub-questions

- That elicit and clarify assumptions
- That clarify a value, principle
- That explore the unknown (Proverbs 25:2)
- That provide guardrails for unfocused and distracting topics
- That stimulate creative alternatives: “What if . . .?”
