When I am the leader

  • Two or more people get together
  • When I am responsible in a relationship for one or more others
    • Husband & wife, parent & child, teacher & student, employer & employee, cell leader & intern, mentor & mentored, friend & friend
    • What shapes me to be the leader I need to be in such relationships?

Times of restoration

  • God forms His people through covenant relationship
  • Prophets call His people back to covenant
  • From captivity
  • We are in a time of restoration of the church, people of God, in our nation

Restoration of Israel and Judah

  • Jeremiah 30:1-24
    • Restoration
    • Return
    • Healing
    • Justice
    • Leadership
    • My people, your God

Leadership

  • Their (his) leader
  • Their (his) ruler (prince)  emerging leader
  • One of them
  • From their midst
  • I will bring him hear, and he shall approach Me
  • Dare to risk his life (radical) to approach Me?
    • Who is he that gives his life in pledge?
    • Jesus, “For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake and of the gospel shall save it”   Mark 8:35
    • Life to be changed, transformed in His presence
  • Will I dare to risk my life as it is to approach God as He is drawing me to Himself?

Leadership with Reverence

  • Numbers 17:14-20
    • Set a king over them whom the Lord chooses
    • One of them
    • Not multiply horses (power)
    • Not multiply wives (satisfaction)
    • Not increase silver and gold for himself (wealth)
    • Throne established by
      • Writing a copy of the law
      • In the presence of Levitical priests
      • Read it all the days of his life Word of God
      • Learn to fear the Lord his God  (personal reverence)
        • Humility
        • Obedience
        • Legacy

Test of Godly Leadership

  • Numbers 16:1-40
    • Korah, Dothan, Abiram, On, 250 leaders of the congregation (Levites)
    • Assembled together against Moses and Aaron (Priests)
      • Wanting to have the same place as the priests, going beyond the place of leadership the Lord has designated and called them to before Him v.8-10
  • Distinguishing leadership chosen by the Lord
    • Will bring them near to Himself   v.5
    • Whom He will choose
    • Lay incense on censors in the presence of the Lord   Prayer
  • Separated, to bring you near to Himself
    • To do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord
    • To stand before the congregation to minister to them
  • Test, whose offering of incense would the Lord receive
    • Ground opened up and destroyed Korah, Dothan, Abiram & families
    • Fire came out from altar and consumed 250 men offering incense
      • (risk of life)
  • The leader whom God chooses is the one whom He draws near to His presence and that in turn validates that person’s leadership (from the presence of God)

Let us draw near 

  • Psalm 65:1-4
    • Forgiveness
    • God chooses
    • Bring near to Himself
    • Satisfies
  • James 4:5-10
    • Jealously desires us
    • Draw near to God, He draws near to us
    • Cleansing hands, purifying hearts
    • Humble yourselves, He will exalt you (including leadership)
  • Hebrews 10:19-23
    • Confidence through the blood of Christ
    • New and living way through sacrifice of His flesh (body)   Communion
    • Draw near with a sincere heart
    • Full assurance of faith
    • Cleansed hearts
    • Confession of hope in His faithfulness

Approach God

  • For restoration of soul
  • For transformation of life and posture toward others
  • For validation of leadership
